On the afternoon of Monday, May 18, 2026, 21-year-old Maysie Murphy was found dead inside a home on Adlong Johnson Road in Crosby, Texas, the victim of an apparent gunshot homicide. Maysie worked as a server and was remembered by family and coworkers for her bright spirit and kindness; her family said she was loved by everyone she met.

Police say the sequence began when the Harris County Sheriff’s Office received a call at about 3:48 p.m. from 55-year-old Courtney Smith, who asked to meet with deputies and reportedly confessed to killing her granddaughter and the granddaughter’s boyfriend. Deputies who entered the residence found Maysie with apparent gunshot wounds; investigators later determined there was no second victim and no evidence a boyfriend was involved. Maysie was not Smith’s biological granddaughter; the two were described as acquaintances who had been living in the home.

The homeowners, who were out of town, had met Smith online and allowed her to stay with them. Law enforcement had also been called to the same address earlier that day, around 1:30 p.m., after Smith told dispatchers she was seeing demons and things of that nature; deputies did not then find sufficient grounds for an emergency detention. Courtney Smith was arrested and charged with Maysie’s murder.

Does anyone have information about Maysie’s time in Crosby or about the household where she was living that could help shed light on what happened?
