Diego Chavoya Zuniga, 23, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of June 12, 2026, outside Auggie’s Bar & Grill in the 5800 block of Imperial Highway in South Gate. The shooting followed an altercation near the bar’s entrance that investigators do not believe was random. At about 2:25 a.m. a suspect fired at Zuniga, who was found by deputies and paramedics with a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau took over the investigation. A person of interest was briefly detained and later released after questioning; no arrests or charges have been announced and the shooter’s identity remains unknown. Detectives say the case hinges on identifying the individual who fled on foot after the shooting.

Anyone who was near Imperial Highway and Auggie’s Bar & Grill that night or who has information about the altercation or the person who ran from the scene is asked to come forward.
