On July 6, 2026, Brookwood police found two people fatally shot inside a home on Alabama Junction Road. The victims were 31-year-old Jose Felix Alvarez-Duenas, discovered just inside the front entrance, and 22-year-old Jazmine Alexis Bates, a Black/African American University of Alabama student who was visiting Alvarez-Duenas and had been expected to graduate in December. The homeowner’s dog was also shot.

Doorbell camera footage prompted a welfare check after the homeowner could not reach the house-sitter. Investigators say the video helped identify 24-year-old De’Kendrick Crawford, who was known to the victims and the homeowner from a previous job and was described as a former friend of Alvarez-Duenas. Crawford was arrested about ten hours after the bodies were found and charged with capital murder; he is being held without bond. Authorities say the victims did nothing to provoke the attack and have not identified a clear motive.

Did anyone who knew Jazmine or Jose notice tensions with Crawford or see him near Alabama Junction Road on the night of July 5–6?
