On the evening of July 5, 2026, a confrontation between two adult neighbors on Grove Street in Peterborough, New Hampshire, ended with 24-year-old Jack Hutchings found in a driveway with apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene; an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death homicide.
The other person involved was an off-duty Peterborough police officer who sustained multiple stab and incised wounds, was treated at a local hospital, and later released. Authorities said the inquiry will examine whether the shooting was in self-defense or defense of others.
