Xavier Bautista, 32, was found fatally shot in the pre-dawn hours of July 4, 2026, near the intersection of Broadway and Norfolk Street by Sennott Park in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Authorities believe the shooting occurred shortly before 4:30 a.m.; a pedestrian discovered his body about an hour later and alerted emergency services. First responders pronounced Bautista dead at the scene. He was a Cambridge resident and Department of Public Works employee, off-duty at the time but scheduled for overtime later that morning.

Bautista is remembered by family and colleagues as playful and loving, devoted to his fiancée, Demetris Grimsley, and their five-year-old son. A GoFundMe was set up to help the family with memorial costs. The City Manager and Mayor issued a joint statement expressing condolences. The Cambridge Police Department, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, and Massachusetts State Police detectives have an active investigation underway; no arrests or publicly identified suspects have been announced and no motive has been released.

The shooting has also intensified debate in Cambridge over the City Council’s recent decision to discontinue ShotSpotter, with some, including police unions, arguing technology might have led to a faster response. Community meetings have been held as residents and Bautista’s family seek answers and accountability.

Did anyone in the Cambridge area see or hear anything around Broadway and Norfolk Street before 4:30 a.m. on July 4, 2026?
