Mekell Jermaine Green, an 18-year-old who attended Clay-Chalkville High School, was shot and killed on the evening of June 30, 2026, in Tarrant, part of the Birmingham, Alabama metro area. Authorities responded about 9:00 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 3000 block of Grove Avenue and found Green with gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Described as a quiet, smart and helpful young man, Green’s death is being investigated as a homicide. Investigators believe he was the victim of an assault, but as of the latest information no suspects had been identified and no arrests or charges had been announced. No motive has been released.
