On the night of June 29, 2026, a crash at 14th and Hull Streets in Clovis revealed a far grimmer scene. Officers found a white SUV with its driver, 28-year-old Abel Abeyta, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Plains Regional Medical Center and later flown to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, where he died on June 30, 2026.

Detectives determined the crash was not the primary scene and traced the shooting to a residence in the 100 block of East Christopher Street. Abel was a Clovis High School graduate who worked in construction and was remembered by family as a humble, generous father to a son. Investigators identified and interviewed a person involved in the shooting but made no immediate arrest; the case file was forwarded to the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for charging review.
