On the evening of June 29, 2026, 19-year-old Nykel Poole was shot and killed in the 2000 block of 32nd Avenue in Gulfport. Police arrived after a report of a shooting at about 8:45 p.m.; the Harrison County Coroner pronounced Nykel dead at 8:55 p.m. from a single gunshot wound. Two other people were found with critical injuries and taken to a local hospital, one identified as Nykel’s twin brother.
The next day authorities arrested 34-year-old John Gaddis III of Gulfport and charged him with one count of first-degree murder in connection with Nykel’s death and two counts of aggravated assault for the other wounded victims. Investigators say the shooting appears tied to an ongoing dispute over drugs between Gaddis and one of the victims. Gaddis was booked into the Harrison County jail with bond set at a total of $2 million.
The family had suffered a prior loss when Nykel’s older brother, Nigel Poole, was shot and killed in January 2016 at age 16; the shooter, then 15, was later convicted of second-degree murder and given a 35-year sentence. What additional information about the night of June 29 might help clarify how events escalated?
