In the early morning of Sunday, June 28, 2026, 38-year-old Jenardo Tejada was shot on Orient Avenue near Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City. Officers found Tejada about 2:30 a.m.; he was taken to Jersey City Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A second Jersey City man, 45, was also found wounded nearby on Jackson Square.
Tejada was a truck driver and is described by family as a hardworking husband, father, son, and brother who protected and provided for his loved ones. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Jersey City Police immediately investigated and, within a day, identified a suspect and issued a public alert naming 36-year-old Raheem Rhett of Jersey City as wanted in connection with the shooting and cautioning he be considered dangerous.
A multi-agency manhunt followed and, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, members of the U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Rhett in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was charged with Murder in Tejada’s death, multiple counts of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, and weapons offenses, and was detained in Wake County pending extradition to New Jersey. If anyone knew Jenardo or saw activity around Orient Avenue that night, please share what you know with investigators.
