On the afternoon of June 26, 2026, deputies from the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a possible deceased person on Sills Road in Arbuckle. At about 4:53 p.m. they found two unresponsive men with apparent gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene; authorities identified them as 48-year-old Jason Edward Carr of Dunnigan and 36-year-old Richard Leon Mathies Jr., a Yolo County resident. The deaths were investigated as a double homicide.

The Colusa County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Colusa County Task Force and California Department of Justice criminalists, processed the scene and conducted interviews while detectives worked through the night collecting evidence. By July no suspects had been publicly identified or arrested, and investigators asked anyone who was on or near Sills Road on June 25 or June 26 and saw anything suspicious to contact them. Friends and family described Carr as generous; a GoFundMe was set up to help his family with funeral costs and to support his children.

What information about those days on Sills Road might help bring clarity to what happened to Jason Carr and Richard Mathies Jr.?
