On the late afternoon of Friday, June 26, 2026, deputies from the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office responded to Sills Road in Arbuckle after a report of a possible deceased person. At about 4:53 p.m. they found two adult men with apparent gunshot wounds, both unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were identified as 36-year-old Richard Leon Mathies Jr. of Yolo County and 48-year-old Jason Edward Carr of Dunnigan.

Detectives from the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office, the Colusa County Task Force and criminalists from the California Department of Justice processed the scene, interviewed potential witnesses and followed leads. Authorities said there did not appear to be any lingering threat to the community. No arrests had been announced and no suspect information was released while the investigation remained active.

Anyone who was traveling on or near Sills Road on Thursday, June 25, or Friday, June 26, and observed suspicious activity, individuals or vehicles is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Antonio Ruiz with information.
