Marquez Banyard, a 27-year-old Black man, was fatally shot during an early-morning attack on Milwaukee’s Lower East Side on June 23, 2026. The shooting occurred shortly before 2 a.m. in the 1600 block of North Van Buren Street, near the Brady Street entertainment district. Banyard was inside a 2014 Nissan Rogue with two other 27-year-old occupants when someone opened fire; he was found in the driver’s seat with a gunshot wound to the head and later died at about 4 a.m. Two others in the vehicle survived with serious but nonfatal wounds to hands, thigh and abdomen.

Investigators collected surveillance from nearby buildings, a city camera and Mango’s Café. Video showed two people approach the Nissan, one of whom was recorded firing what investigators believed was a fully automatic handgun. Detectives focused on 26-year-old Milwaukee resident Tawon Dashawn Coleman, who was identified in a photographic lineup by one surviving victim and arrested on June 30. Court documents say Coleman admitted being at Mango’s, acknowledged a prior altercation with Banyard and told investigators he fired multiple shots before handing the gun to another person and leaving.

If anyone saw the Nissan or the area around North Van Buren Street that night, can you share what you remember?
