On the evening of June 20, 2026, 53-year-old Shane Charles was shot inside his business, Carmel’s Sports Bar & Grill in Anaconda, Montana. Witness statements and surveillance footage say a man later identified as 61-year-old Mark Ray Lock approached Charles, spoke briefly, then allegedly produced a 9 mm handgun and fired one shot that struck Charles. He was taken to a local hospital and died of his wounds. Charles was a husband and father of four daughters.
After the shooting a bystander wrestled with the gunman and disarmed him, but the suspect ran from the bar. Officers established a perimeter, spotted a man matching the description driving in a nearby alley, and arrested Lock. Lock was charged with deliberate homicide and held at the Deer Lodge County Jail on $1 million bond; his next court appearance was scheduled for mid-July 2026. Authorities have not released any information about a motive.
