On the night of June 19, 2026, 47-year-old Hasan Barksdale was found with gunshot wounds at the Willow Oaks Apartment Complex in South Boston, Virginia, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified a suspect, Robert Penick, and say he left the South Boston area for Lynchburg in the early morning hours after the shooting.

South Boston investigators obtained warrants and shared Penick’s name and vehicle description with nearby agencies. Lynchburg officers, alerted by Flock camera technology that the vehicle had entered their city, located and attempted a traffic stop. Penick fled but was caught after a short pursuit and taken into custody. Within 24 hours of Barksdale’s death, authorities had an arrest.

Penick has been charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and preventing a law enforcement officer from making an arrest, and is being held without bond at Blue Ridge Regional Jail.
