A routine afternoon at Wilmington Hospital turned deadly on June 16, 2026, when 19-year-old Technology Development Intern Ethan Hillman of Smyrna was fatally shot following a dispute earlier that day with co-workers. A second 19-year-old intern, Jaden Ellis, was wounded and is reported in stable condition.
Authorities identified 23-year-old John Wallace-Bey of New Castle, a fellow IT intern at ChristianaCare, as the suspect. Investigators say Wallace-Bey left the hospital after a verbal argument and returned about 3:30 p.m. armed, using his employee ID badge to enter through an employee entrance that did not have a metal detector. After the shooting he fled by train to Philadelphia and was apprehended six hours later in the Olney neighborhood.
Wallace-Bey was charged with First-Degree Murder, First-Degree Attempted Murder, two counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, extradited to Delaware, held on $3 million bail and indicted on seven felony counts; an arraignment is scheduled for mid-July. The hospital is reviewing employee screening and security procedures in response.
If anyone knew Ethan, Jaden, or observed events at Wilmington Hospital that afternoon, please share information that could help the ongoing case.
