On the evening of April 15, 1985, in Fort Lauderdale, eight-year-old Shandra Whitehead was found in her home, raped and murdered. The cause of death was repetitive blows from a rock and attempted strangulation. Her mother, Dorothy McGriff, discovered the body and saw a man’s shoulders as he fled through a window.
Police focused on neighborhood eyewitness accounts from two teenagers, Chiquita Lowe and Gerald Davis, and a composite sketch. Lowe’s family later identified a man trying to sell them a television as matching the sketch; that man, 38-year-old Frank Lee Smith, was arrested. The prosecution relied heavily on Lowe’s testimony and Dorothy McGriff’s identification by the shape of the suspect’s shoulders. With no physical evidence linking him to the crime, Smith was convicted, the jury recommending death.
Lowe recanted in 1989, saying she had been pressured and later named Eddie Lee Mosley. Smith’s petitions for DNA testing were repeatedly denied; he died of cancer in prison on January 30, 2000. DNA testing conducted after his death, in December 2000, excluded Smith and identified Eddie Lee Mosley as the man who raped and murdered Shandra Whitehead.
Does anyone have information about the investigation or witnesses from that neighborhood in 1985?
