Geraldine Barfield, a 35-year-old Black woman, was found dead in a field beside Immanuel Church of God in Christ near Sunland Park in northwest Fort Lauderdale on December 19, 1983. Investigators determined she had been sexually assaulted and strangled. The discovery came amid a wave of rapes and murders affecting predominantly African American neighborhoods in the city.

Police associated Barfield’s killing with Eddie Lee Mosley, a repeat sexual offender who had been released from custody in November 1983 after accepting a plea deal. Mosley was viewed as a likely suspect because of the timing, location, and similarities to other attacks; investigators later believed he was responsible for multiple victims. Forensic testing did not conclusively link him to Barfield’s death, and no one was ever convicted in her murder. Mosley was later found incompetent to stand trial on other murders and remained institutionalized until his death in 2020.

Barfield’s family, including her daughter Jacquelyn D. Miller, has urged renewed attention to the case. Does anyone have information about Geraldine Barfield, the area near Sunland Park in 1983, or contacts who might help bring new leads?
