On October 16, 1974, 35-year-old Karen Wine and her 16-year-old daughter Dawn Marie Wine were found dead in their Marlborough, Connecticut home. Both victims had been bound, sexually assaulted, and strangled with stockings. The scene indicated an intruder; the only item reported missing was a tape recorder.
The killer was later identified as Paul John Knowles, who was on a multi-state crime spree after escaping custody in Florida on July 26, 1974. Knowles targeted multiple victims across several states; he later recorded confessions on tapes, including material taken from the Wines’ home. He was apprehended on November 17, 1974, and was shot and killed on December 18, 1974, before facing trial for all the crimes.
The Wines’ murder remains a stark example of the wider violence carried out by Knowles during that period. Did anyone in the Marlborough area at the time have knowledge of unfamiliar visitors or a missing tape recorder in October 1974?
