On October 16, 1974, 16-year-old Dawn Marie Wine was at the Marlborough, Connecticut, home she shared with her mother, Karen Wine, when a man knocked and asked whether her parents were home. Dawn said her mother was away; the intruder forced his way in, produced a sawed-off shotgun, and later forced Dawn into a bedroom where he sexually assaulted her. When Karen returned from work the man held both women at gunpoint, ate dinner with them, then bound and strangled them with nylon stockings inside their home.

Investigators later identified the intruder as Paul John Knowles, a fugitive linked to a months-long crime spree of robberies, assaults, abductions and killings across multiple states. A portable tape recorder taken from the Wine home was among items Knowles used to record confessions he mailed to a Florida attorney. Knowles was captured in Georgia on November 17, 1974, but was shot and killed by an agent on December 18, 1974 while being transported; no Connecticut trial ever took place and no other suspects were charged in the Marlborough killings.

Does anyone have memories or information about the Wine family or the Marlborough area in October 1974 that could add detail to this case?
