James Meyer, 29, a businessman from Delaware, was traveling through the Southeast on November 16, 1974, when he was stopped on a Georgia highway by a vehicle using patrol lights. The driver was Paul John Knowles, who had earlier abducted Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Charles Eugene Campbell after seizing the trooper’s patrol car in Florida. Knowles forced Meyer into the patrol car, drove both men into Pulaski County, Georgia, handcuffed them to a tree and shot each in the head at close range. Knowles then took Meyer’s automobile and fled north.
Law enforcement captured Knowles the following day after a pursuit and an encounter with a local resident. Investigators connected him to the Pulaski County killings and a string of murders across several states. Knowles was shot and killed by a GBI agent on December 18, 1974, while being transported before any murder trial could be completed.
If anyone knew James Meyer or saw his car or that highway stop on November 16, 1974, please share what was seen or remembered.
