On April 30, 1988, 46-year-old John L. Woods was found brutally stabbed to death in his apartment in Decatur, Illinois. Two of the multiple stab wounds pierced his heart and lungs.
Johnson, described as Woods’s partner, lacked a credible alibi, was found with items stolen from the apartment, and possessed a knife consistent with the murder weapon. Investigators also sought two other men seen with Woods shortly before his death — a young white male at a Hardee’s and a young black male seen jogging with him near a YMCA — but those leads produced no identified suspects and the case went cold.
Johnson later died in prison in October 2003 while serving unrelated sentences. In September 2009 his DNA matched evidence from the Woods murder, identifying him as the killer and linking him to other Decatur homicides. Does anyone have information about Woods’s last day or those two men seen with him before the attack?
