On May 1, 1993, 21-year-old Dodson Sparman was fatally shot in a daylight attack at the corner of St. Paul’s Court and Ocean Avenue in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. Sparman and 18-year-old Ryan Cambridge were both killed when a gunman perched on the handlebars of a moving bicycle, pedaled by an associate, fired pistols with both hands into a group. Two other people were wounded in the same barrage. The investigation identified 19-year-old Richard Jameswhite, known as Babyface, as a prime suspect. Police said Jameswhite was a Parkside Gang member with a reputation for violence tied to gang conflicts and drug disputes, and that he had been wanted in connection with several other killings and shootings in Brooklyn. Jameswhite remained at large for about two years before being captured in DeKalb County, Georgia, on April 28, 1994, after a traffic accident and a subsequent shooting in which Anthony Maclin was killed. He and an accomplice were convicted in Georgia of malice murder and sentenced to life in December 1994, but the Brooklyn cases, including Sparman’s killing, were never brought to trial.
Did anyone in Flatbush at the time see the bicycle or the shooter that day, or have other information about Sparman’s case?
