A minor parking-lot collision in DeKalb County, Georgia, on April 28, 1994, escalated into a fatal shooting. Anthony Maclin and his fiancée were involved in a slight fender bender with a car carrying two men, later identified as Devon Brown and Richard Jameswhite. The men, who were fugitives from another state, insisted on settling without police and promised to pay for repairs; Jameswhite briefly left to get money.

Tensions rose, and when Maclin’s fiancée turned away to call the police, a popping sound was heard. She then saw Jameswhite holding Maclin while Brown pointed a pistol. Brown drove off as Maclin fell; Jameswhite shot him. Both assailants fled but were quickly pursued. Jameswhite was arrested at an apartment complex with two firearms recovered; Brown was arrested the next day after photo identification and an eyewitness and officer placed him at the scene. Ballistics linked bullets and casings to one of Jameswhite’s guns. Both men were indicted and, after a joint trial, convicted of malice murder and given life sentences.
