In the winter of 1986, 35-year-old Lorna Patricia Reed of Pomona was found partly clad in brush in an isolated area of Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas. Her body was discovered on Tuesday, February 11, 1986, and an autopsy later determined she had been strangled.
Detectives noted troubling similarities between Reed’s death and a string of unsolved killings that had been occurring in South-Central Los Angeles: the victim profile, who were mostly Black women and often involved prostitution, and the placement of bodies in secluded locations. A joint task force from the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department canvassed Pomona’s Holt Avenue, a known area for streetwalkers, seeking witnesses to Reed’s last hours, which investigators believe were between 10 p.m. Monday and 2 a.m. Tuesday. Investigators were working from a suspect description of a Black man, 28 to 36 years old, with a muscular build.
The case remained unsolved for many years and became one of several that haunted the region. Does anyone have information about Lorna Reed, her last known whereabouts, or contacts who might have seen her the night she disappeared?
