Devin D. May, 24, was among five family members killed in a series of shootings across East St. Louis on July 12, 2026. The victims represented three generations of a single family; Devin is remembered as a hardworking father who had proposed to his wife, Chelsey Gatlin, six days before his death. The couple’s young daughter will grow up without him.
The violence occurred at multiple locations in the city and reportedly left two other people seriously wounded. Authorities allege the shootings were carried out by a teenage couple: a 15-year-old female relative of the victims and her 16-year-old boyfriend, JaYmier Davis. The teenagers were taken into custody after a police chase ended with a PIT maneuver. Davis has been charged as an adult with multiple felonies, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and dismembering a human body; prosecutors are seeking to transfer the 15-year-old’s case to adult court on first-degree murder charges.
Family members said they believe the motive was the family’s disapproval of the teens’ relationship; a relative said the couple wanted to eliminate those who opposed them. A joint funeral service was held for Devin, his mother Cherie May, and his grandmother Patricia May, who were remembered for their loving nature. Did anyone in the East St. Louis area know Devin or have information about the movements of the family or the suspects on July 12, 2026?
