A targeted attack on July 12, 2026, left five members of an East St. Louis family dead, including 74-year-old Patricia May, and injured two others. Patricia, described as a longtime member of the House of Prayer to All Nations Church and the family matriarch, was killed along with Cherie L. May, 49; Devin D. May, 20; Quentin L. Thompson, 21; and Shania W. Thompson, 25. The shootings occurred at three separate locations in the city.

Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the rampage: a 15-year-old female relative of the victims and her 16-year-old boyfriend, Ja’ymeir Davis. Davis was charged as an adult with five counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated vehicular hijacking. Prosecutors are seeking to move the 15-year-old’s case from juvenile to adult court. Family members held a joint funeral service for Patricia, Cherie, and Devin at the church; survivors remembered Patricia as the glue of the family.
