On the night of July 27, 1981, 27-year-old Gregory Sanchez and 35-year-old Cheri Domingo were house-sitting on Toltec Way in Goleta, California, when a masked intruder with a gun entered the home. Sanchez, described as tall and athletic, fought the attacker and was shot in the face; the wound initially subdued him but was not immediately fatal. The assailant bound and assaulted Domingo; Sanchez later regained consciousness and continued to struggle before both victims were bludgeoned to death.
For decades the double homicide remained unsolved and baffled investigators. In 2011 a degraded DNA sample from semen at the scene produced a match tying the killer to a series of rapes and murders attributed to the East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker. Genetic genealogy later identified a suspect, and in April 2018 an arrest was made; charges were filed in May 2018 and a guilty plea was entered in June 2020.
Does anyone have memories of Goleta in 1981 or information about Sanchez or Domingo that could add context to these events?
