Antone Davis, a 30-year-old Black man, was stabbed to death in Manhattan’s Garment District at about 6:47 p.m. on December 22, 1980, in the midst of a daylong series of knife attacks across Midtown.
Police described the wanted attacker as a white man about 5 feet 7 inches tall, muscular, around 160 to 170 pounds, wearing gold wire-rimmed glasses. The investigation later focused on Army private Joseph Gerard Christopher of Buffalo, who arrived in Manhattan shortly before the December 22 attacks and was linked to further knife attacks in western New York.
Davis’s killing is generally attributed in historical accounts to Christopher’s December 22 spree, yet the Manhattan convictions did not directly concern Davis’s death. Does anyone have further information about Davis’s life, his movements that day, or witnesses who might have seen him in the Garment District?
