Cheryl DeLeon was 40 when she was murdered in Port Arthur, Texas, on November 20, 1997. She had been returning home from her job at Luby’s Cafeteria when a man who had been stalking her ambushed her in her driveway. The attacker beat her with his gun and then shot her in the throat. The apparent motive was robbery.

Investigators later linked the slaying to Elroy Chester, a former co-worker, after ballistics testing matched a .380 pistol recovered by police to bullets from DeLeon’s scene and other crimes in the area. Chester confessed to DeLeon’s murder as part of a series of violent offenses in Port Arthur between August 1997 and February 1998 that included multiple murders, burglaries, and sexual assaults.

Does anyone have memories of Port Arthur in late 1997 or information about Cheryl’s life there that could add context to this case?
