Donna Mraz, 23, was fatally stabbed in the pre-dawn hours of July 2, 1982, after finishing a shift at The Bittersweet on State Street in Madison. She was walking home along a sidewalk near Camp Randall Stadium when an unknown assailant attacked her. A student who witnessed the assault from an apartment window ran to help, but Donna died at the scene from a major stab wound to the chest.
The UW-Madison Police Department lists the case as active and cold-case work has continued for decades. Investigators have worked with state and federal agencies, offered a $10,000 reward, exhumed Donna’s body to compare dental evidence to bite marks, and explored links to other murders in the area; none of these efforts produced an arrest or identified a definitive suspect or motive. Concerns that multiple unsolved Madison-area killings from that period might be related were raised, though confessions by Henry Lee Lucas were discounted.
Anyone who knew Donna, saw something that night, or has information that might help should contact the UW-Madison Police Department.
