Werling Mendez, an 18-year-old male from the Bronx, was killed during a mass shooting in the Eastchester section of the Bronx in the early morning hours of August 23, 2026. Police were called shortly before 5:45 a.m. to 1710 East 233rd Street, near Boston Road in the 47th Precinct, after reports that several people had been shot at a car meetup that had drawn attendees via social media.

Mendez suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was taken by private vehicle to BronxCare Health System in critical condition; he later died. Investigators recovered more than 60 spent shell casings at the scene. Two other people were shot — a 22-year-old man in the chest and a 20-year-old woman in the foot — and were listed in stable condition at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi. Two women, ages 25 and 37, were hospitalized after being robbed of wallets and jewelry during the disorder; those injuries were not from gunfire.

Police say an unidentified person opened fire and fled; no shooter has been publicly identified and no arrests had been announced as of August 25, 2026. The large number of people at the gathering, the volume of gunfire and contemporaneous robberies have complicated establishing a motive or target. Does anyone who was at the meetup or who lives nearby have information that could help investigators identify the shooter?
