Late afternoon on Friday, August 21, 2026, Gonzales, Louisiana, was the scene of a double homicide. Officers responding shortly after 4 p.m. to a residence on East Caldwell Street found 21-year-old Jared Downey and 17-year-old Tegan Daigle dead of gunshot wounds near Downey’s home. Witness statements and video surveillance showed a black BMW at the residence just before the shooting and leaving afterwards, a detail that helped investigators identify several people connected to the incident.
With assistance from the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, police arrested 17-year-old Joseph Appiah of Prairieville and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder, principals to first-degree murder, criminal conspiracy, a drug offense involving a Schedule I substance, eight counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, and discharging a firearm within city limits. Two other individuals have been identified as persons of interest and are being interviewed. Authorities say illegal drug activity played a significant role in the events that led to the shooting.
No motive has been publicly declared beyond investigators linking drugs to the incident. Did anyone in Gonzales or Prairieville see a black BMW in the area on the afternoon of August 21, 2026, or have information about the people involved?
