A promising 15-year-old student was killed inside an apartment building laundry room in Cleveland on the afternoon of Thursday, August 20, 2026. Christine Bogarty, a Black/African American sophomore at Max S. Hayes High School who was days away from the new school year, was found with a gunshot wound in the second-floor laundry room at Jennings Commons in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood and was pronounced dead at the scene after EMS and officers responded around 1:30 p.m.
Within a short period investigators identified and located two 15-year-old boys believed to be connected to the shooting. Both were taken into custody and transported to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center. Officers recovered two firearms from the scene. Police say the shooting does not appear to have been random and that Bogarty was known to the suspects; the nature of that relationship has not been disclosed. No formal charges have been announced.
Anyone who knew Christine, saw activity near 900 block of Spring Road that afternoon, or has information about her death is asked to come forward.
