Ichon Ringwood, 42, was fatally shot the morning of August 20, 2026, at the Berger Apartments on Derby Avenue in New Haven. Police were called shortly before 10:30 a.m. after reports of gunfire; officers found Ringwood with a gunshot wound in the building’s vestibule and he was taken to a hospital where he later died. Within about an hour authorities were treating the shooting as a homicide.
Investigators say the violence appears to have begun outside the apartment entrance when a dispute developed between groups gathered there and several shots were fired. Police have not established whether Ringwood was involved in that dispute or whether he was the intended target. New Haven’s mayor and a police spokesperson both said there was reason to consider that Ringwood may not have been deliberately targeted. No gunman or suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests or charges were announced through August 25. Detectives asked witnesses or anyone with information to contact the New Haven Police Department or submit an anonymous tip.
If anyone was in front of the Berger Apartments that morning or has dashcam or doorbell footage, can you share what you saw?
