Joanne Perry, a 64-year-old mother of six and two-time cancer survivor, was killed on the morning of August 19, 2026, in Chicago’s West Garfield Park neighborhood. She was walking to a convenience store near the intersection of Pulaski Road and Jackson Boulevard around 11:53 a.m. to play the lottery when a stray bullet struck her chest. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead.

Police say the gunfire began when two men approached a 25-year-old man in the 200 block of South Pulaski Road and at least one of the men opened fire. The 25-year-old was shot multiple times and also died. The gunmen chased the man for several blocks, firing recklessly; a bullet from that exchange struck Perry. Witnesses reported the suspects fleeing in a black sedan. No arrests have been announced and investigators are reviewing surveillance video from the area.

Perry’s family and community leaders have expressed outrage and grief over the loss of a beloved mother and grandmother. Does anyone have information or surveillance footage from Pulaski Road and Jackson Boulevard around late morning on August 19 that could help the investigation?
