Samare’ Heard was an 11-year-old Black boy who died after suffering a single gunshot wound to the center of his forehead inside his Milwaukee home on the night of August 17, 2026. Family members and investigators described the shooting as an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot that occurred while Samare was in the care of his mother’s longtime boyfriend, Christopher Taper. Samare’s mother, Jamie Campbell, had left shortly after 9 p.m. to begin a third-shift job and said she spoke by phone with both Taper and Samare before leaving.
Prosecutors allege Taper left the residence without contacting 911 and was gone by the time Samare’s aunt arrived and placed the emergency call at about 9:37 p.m.; police and medics found Samare unconscious and not breathing at about 9:44 p.m. A Taurus G3 9 mm handgun was reportedly found near his feet.
Samare had celebrated his 11th birthday on August 7 and was about to enter sixth grade. His mother called him Big ’Mare and said he was good in school, helped with chores, and had not previously been exposed to firearms. Does anyone have information about the events at the home that night or about the whereabouts of Christopher Taper?
