Five-year-old Tamir Washington died after a firearm inside his family’s home discharged and struck him in the head on a Monday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee. Tamir had just returned from school, was eating and working on homework, and had started the new school year about two weeks earlier when the shooting occurred. Deputies and emergency crews found a chaotic scene on Baysweet Drive: neighbors had tried to help, there was a large amount of blood on the floor, Tamir’s mother was distraught and covered in blood, and the child was rushed to a children’s hospital where he was pronounced dead less than an hour after deputies arrived.
Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies located a black handgun on a bed in one of the bedrooms. Tamir’s father, 24-year-old Marquavious Washington, was in the front yard and later taken into custody. He was charged with criminally negligent homicide, aggravated child abuse, and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon; authorities allege the firearm belonged to him and had not been securely stored. Bond was set at $100,000.
Anyone who knew the family or saw activity at the Baysweet Drive residence around the time of the shooting is asked to share what they remember.
