Alhassane Barry, a 29-year-old off-duty Philadelphia police officer and two-year department veteran assigned to the 12th District, was shot and killed in the early hours of Sunday, August 16, 2026. The shooting occurred around 4 a.m. on the 7200 block of Elmwood Avenue in the Elmwood Park neighborhood after a dispute at an after-hours lounge escalated into violence. Surveillance footage reportedly shows a chaotic altercation involving several people before gunfire erupted. Barry was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in extremely critical condition and was pronounced dead later that morning.
A 35-year-old man was also shot multiple times and remained hospitalized in critical condition. Investigators recovered a weapon at the scene and have been reviewing video and interviewing witnesses. Authorities released images of a person of interest and later said they had identified a suspect, described as a tall man with a thin-to-medium build, dark complexion, last seen in a black hooded jacket and light blue surgical mask; no name has been released and no arrests had been made as of late August 2026. Barry had previously served about a decade in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Anyone with information about the shooting or the identified suspect is asked to come forward.
