Shortly after 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, ShotSpotter alerted Holyoke police to gunfire near High and Cabot streets. Officers found 47-year-old Alexis Colón in a business parking lot with a gunshot wound. First responders transported him to Baystate Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The Holyoke Police Department and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office led the investigation. A suspect, 36-year-old Jose Lopez-Rivera of Holyoke, was arrested and charged with murder, illegal possession of a firearm, assault with a dangerous weapon, and firing a gun within 500 feet of a building. Colón was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on May 17, 1979; he held a certificate in industrial, commercial, and residential electricity from Porter and Chester Institute and taught mathematics at Holyoke Community College.
Does anyone in the community have information about that night or knew Alexis Colón?
