Andrew Jones, 23, was fatally shot during a large block party in Richmond’s Fairfield Court neighborhood on the night of August 15, 2026. The shooting happened in the 2200 block of North 23rd Street shortly before 11 p.m., while a crowd had gathered near an apartment complex. Richmond officers who were already nearby heard the gunfire at about 10:52 p.m., found Jones at the rear of an apartment building with apparent gunshot wounds and began rendering aid; he was transported to a local hospital and died later that night.

Officers reported seeing another adult man running near the scene while firing a weapon; that individual was detained and later charged with reckless handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm within city limits. Police emphasized those charges concern his alleged conduct with a firearm and did not allege he killed Jones. Investigators did not publicly say whether ballistics tied the detained man’s weapon to the shots that struck Jones, and no one had been charged with murder as of the latest information.

The crime scene spanned a large area around North 23rd and Selden streets, complicating efforts to reconstruct where the fatal shots came from amid the crowd. Detectives were seeking witnesses and other evidence to establish the sequence of events and identify who fired the fatal shot. If anyone was at the block party or saw the shooting, can you share what you observed with Richmond Police or Crime Stoppers?
