A verbal argument on the evening of August 15, 2026, in Big Creek, Kentucky, ended in an exchange of gunfire that left 55-year-old James Lawson dead. The shooting occurred in front of the home of the other man involved. Lawson was later found unresponsive a short distance away in his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clay County Coroner’s Office after first responders attempted aid.

Kentucky State Police say the dispute was between Lawson and 36-year-old Jeremy Petrey. Both men reportedly drew firearms and shot at one another. Petrey sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment. Detectives processed the scene on Arnetts Fork Road and an autopsy was scheduled to determine the precise cause of death; the investigation was described as ongoing and no arrest had been announced.
