Investigators identified 21-year-old Hunter James Anderson as the primary suspect. Anderson fled the state but was located by an officer with the Southwest City Police Department in Missouri; a pursuit led to his arrest and he was held in the McDonald County Jail before being extradited to Benton County and charged with capital murder.
