On the late afternoon of August 12, 2026, 51-year-old Karla Abarca was killed by a stray bullet while seated in her car at the intersection of East Bonanza Road and North Lamb Boulevard in Las Vegas. A Hispanic mother of five, Abarca had been running errands and sharing ice cream with her daughter; her daughter witnessed the shooting. Medical personnel transported Abarca to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department investigators determined the bullet came from a nearby parking lot where a man armed with a rifle had confronted another man at a bus stop. The armed man fired as the other man ran; both individuals fled before officers arrived. Detectives arrested 21-year-old Francisco Chairez-Hernandez on August 15, 2026, and booked him on multiple counts including open murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, and discharging a gun at or into an occupied vehicle. The defense has argued Chairez-Hernandez acted in self-defense, while prosecutors say he instigated the confrontation instead of contacting police.
This case ended the life of an uninvolved mother and left her family grieving. Did anyone see activity in that parking lot or at the bus stop on August 12 that could help clarify what happened?
