On November 29, 1979, 73-year-old retired teacher Alice Stock was found murdered in her Fort Lauderdale home. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled, a violent killing that left the neighborhood shocked and the case unsolved for many years.
A young man who lived across the street at the time, Adolph James Rode Jr., later known as Cesar Barone, was considered a suspect soon after the murder but detectives could not develop enough evidence then to charge him. The case went cold while Barone moved on and committed further violent crimes in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1990s.
After his arrest in Oregon for multiple rapes and murders, Fort Lauderdale investigators reopened Stock’s case. Authorities charged Barone in connection with the 1979 killing, but he never faced a separate trial in Florida; he died on death row in 2009. Few details remain publicly explained about the evidence that linked him to Stock’s death.
If anyone knew Alice Stock or lived in that Fort Lauderdale neighborhood in 1979, what do they remember about the weeks before and after her murder?
