Roderick Lynn Butler, a 39-year-old African American man, was fatally shot at his Burlington Avenue residence in Durham, North Carolina, on the evening of June 26, 2007. Police say Butler answered a knock shortly before 9 p.m. and was confronted by two men—one in a red shirt and one in a white shirt—who shot him and fled. He was taken to Duke University Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.
Authorities released only the clothing descriptions of the assailants and provided no further details about suspects or motive. No arrests have been reported and the case remains unsolved. Butler, born in 1968, is buried at Glennview Memorial Park in Durham. His death was noted amid a period of elevated homicides in Durham County, where non-Hispanic Black males experienced a much higher homicide rate than non-Hispanic white males between 2007 and 2016.
If anyone has information about the shooting on Burlington Avenue on June 26, 2007, please contact the Durham Police Department.
