Andrea Scherpf was a 23-year-old White woman from West Germany who was traveling through northern British Columbia with her fiancé, Bernd Göricke, in the fall of 1983. The couple, hitchhiking with backpacks and camping gear, are believed to have accepted a ride in a 1960s Chevrolet pickup near Chetwynd on or about October 3 and were not seen alive again. Their bodies were found October 6 about 32 kilometres from Chetwynd near Highway 97 and the Pine River; both had been shot to death and much of their property was missing.

A pair of blood-spattered jeans recovered near the scene became a key piece of physical evidence. Five of Scherpf’s travelers checks were later used at gas stations on October 4 and 5 at locations including Prince George, Quesnel, McLeese Lake, Lac La Hache and 100 Mile House, suggesting the killer continued south in the pickup. Andy Rose was convicted twice in the 1990s but both convictions were overturned; DNA testing on the jeans showed biological material from the victims and an unidentified third person that did not match Rose. An alternate suspect, Vance Hill, was later implicated by his ex-wife but the unidentified DNA did not match him either and he died in 1985.

No one has been convicted of killing Andrea Scherpf and Bernd Göricke and the case remains unsolved. If anyone knew the pickup, the items stolen from the couple, or the person who possessed them, please come forward with information.
