Bernd Göricke, 27, and his fiancée Andrea Scherpf were hitchhiking through northeastern British Columbia when both were shot to death along a remote trail west of Chetwynd in early October 1983. Their bodies were found October 6 about 32 kilometres west of town; both suffered fatal gunshot wounds to the head and their belongings were missing. Five travellers’ cheques belonging to the couple were forged and used on October 4–5, tracing a route south from the Chetwynd area through communities including Prince George, Quesnel, McLeese Lake, Lac La Hache and 100 Mile House. Blue jeans later recovered near Chetwynd were heavily bloodstained and bore high-velocity spatter consistent with the victims’ blood.

After years with no charge, Andrew “Andy” Rose was arrested in 1989 based largely on the testimony of Mary Madonna Kelly and was convicted twice of second-degree murder (1991 and 1994). Appellate review and later DNA testing raised serious doubts about his involvement, and investigators also developed leads implicating Vance Hill, who died by suicide in 1985. Investigators later used an undercover Mr. Big operation that produced incriminating statements from Rose. Does anyone have information about Göricke and Scherpf’s travels in the Chetwynd area or recall seeing their vehicle or the travellers’ cheques being cashed that October?
