Byron Carr, 36, was found dead in his Charlottetown home at 24 Lapthorne Avenue after being reported missing when he did not attend a family gathering. Police place his death on November 11, 1988; investigators determined he died sometime between about 3:30 and 9:00 a.m. that day. Carr taught at Montague Regional High School and was remembered as a caring teacher, neighbour and friend.
Evidence at the scene indicated Carr had engaged in a consensual sexual encounter with another man shortly before the killing. He was strangled with a towel and stabbed with a kitchen knife. A threatening message saying I will kill again was left on a wall and his wallet was reported missing. A young cyclist who spoke with Carr downtown and then appeared to follow him was one of the last significant sightings examined by police.
Investigators collected biological evidence that for decades produced no identifying match. In January 2024 police arrested Todd Joseph Gallant, who has also used the name Todd Joseph Irving, and charged him with first-degree murder and interfering with human remains; a second person arrested that day was released without charges. Did anyone who knew Byron in 1988 notice anyone following him that night or have other information about his movements after 3:30 a.m.?
