Michael Marvin Masson was 27 when he disappeared from Medicine Hat, Alberta, in the summer of 1989. He was last seen after checking into the Hat Motel on June 5, 1989; within about two hours he left and never returned to his room. His transient work and frequent moves between Medicine Hat, southern Alberta and Saskatchewan made his final movements hard to reconstruct, and people who knew him often could not place him at specific times or locations.

On July 31, 1989, two boys hunting outside Medicine Hat found badly decomposed human remains in a roadside thicket or shallow grave about 10 kilometres southeast of the city. The remains were later identified as Masson through dental and medical record comparisons, and a wallet belonging to him was reportedly found by a grader operator near the recovery area on August 3. Investigators treated the death as a murder but never publicly identified a suspect, motive, arrest or charge.

What did Masson’s last hours look like after he left the Hat Motel, and did anyone who saw him that night come forward with details that could solve this case?
