Diane Dobson, a 36-year-old Indigenous woman from Saugeen First Nation and a mother of three, was last seen on the evening of February 14, 1995, in west Windsor near Prince Road and Myrtle Street. She had been planning to visit her children in Kingsville. Her body was found the next day in a ditch in the Brighton Beach area near the 4700 block of Water Street; she had been violently beaten and died of numerous blunt-force head injuries.
Investigators concluded the ditch was likely a disposal site rather than the location of the assault: there was only a small amount of blood where the body was left, she was not wearing shoes, and plant material in her hand came from a houseplant not native to Ontario. Police later confirmed Dobson’s live-in boyfriend was in Toronto when she disappeared and said he and her former husband were cleared. Published accounts indicate investigators later considered the possibility of two people being involved, but no one has been publicly identified or charged.
The Major Crimes Unit’s Cold Case Review Team reopened the file in 2025, resubmitted evidence for advanced DNA testing, and a reward of up to $20,000 was approved for information. The case remains an active, unsolved homicide. Does anyone with memories of Diane or knowledge of that area in 1995 have information that could help investigators?
